Neltje Book Launch
We put quite a few souls between our covers when we’re holding court at venues like Round Top but it’s a bit rare that we get to know them as well as we have Neltje, thanks to her memoir North of Crazy that has just been released. It takes a special set of covers to hold the level of courage and heart exhibited in the book, which unveils her trials and tribulations as a challenged child, an embattled heiress and a beleaguered divorcée. Finding solace in rural Wyoming as she explored her artistic leanings as an abstract expressionist painter, she exhibits the strength of will we love to celebrate amongst our tribe.
So we are doing just that with a book signing on Friday, September 23, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in our tent at Round Top. You’ll be bowled over by this seeker’s presence if you have the chance to stop by. She was born Neltje Doubleday, though she has been known by solely her first name for years. Her grandfather was the founder of Doubleday Page, which we know in modern times as Doubleday Publishing.
At eighteen Neltje married John Sargent, Sr., who would eventually become the president and chief executive of Doubleday. Years later he would turn over the reins to her brother Nelson Doubleday. But the cultural prestige she was afforded by her family’s wealth would always be overshadowed by the treatment she suffered as a child of alcoholic parents and as a victim of sexual abuse at the age of nine.
During the glory days, she rubbed elbows with some of literatures greats that included Theodore Roethke, Bertrand Russell and W. Somerset Maugham. But once marriages began falling apart and a fierce battle to take Doubleday public ensued, Neltje retreated to the base of the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming where she immersed herself in raising her two children and painting canvases that depict her emotional response to the natural world. At 82, she’s not planning on letting up anytime soon, and we truly commend her for that! We’re including a few reviews of the book below the other news we have to share. Did we mention we’re busy as bees? We weren’t kidding!
Launch of Pandora de Balthazár
We are beside ourselves with excitement because we’re launching a new limited edition home fragrance this coming Monday morning beginning at 9:30 a.m. Our debut will be in conjunction with the Designer Dream Spree’s visit to our field. Our bespoke fragrance has top notes of bergamot, neroli and petitgrain; mid notes of orange blossom, tuberose and magnolia; and base notes of white musk, amber and cedarwood to reflect the sensual essence we adore.
We look forward to meeting the coordinators of the Designer Dream Spree, Julie Dodson and Ike Isenhour, as well as Barry Darr Dixon, Kevin Isbell, Mary Douglas Drysdale and Michelle Nussbaumer, the program’s panelists who will be discussing “Exceptional Discoveries” at 3 p.m. on September 26th at The Compound. We’ll see if we can snap some shots of these design luminaries as they move through our corner of the larger-than-life world that is Round Top!
The Antiques Diva Touring & Alluring
As we mentioned in our first post highlighting our exciting events, Toma Clark Haines, aka The Antiques Diva, is on the scene, leading champagne tours and regaling everyone during mixers. The Antiques Diva Champagne Tours get underway on September 23rd at 11 a.m., on September 24th at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m., and on September 25th at 11 a.m.
During the Mixer on September 22nd from 6 to 8 p.m.—a meet and greet with Toma—wine, hors d’oeuvres and crudités will be served at the Stardust Martini Bar; and the September 24th Mixer gets underway at 6 p.m. We’re thrilled to be welcoming The Antiques Diva as our Brand Ambassador; as such, she will be curating The Diva Bed, which we will unveil at High Point Market during “Breakfast in Bed with The Antiques Diva” on October 22nd at 10:30 a.m. Champagne and light bites will be served as The Diva Bed is unveiled, the masterpiece curated from our vast store of antique linens. Stay tuned for more details as we wrap up Round Top and make haste to North Carolina!
Events In Our Space Daily from 10 to 5
Don’t forget, we are holding our usual Daily Sleep Seminars during which we help those who attend understand the power of sleep. We’ll be exploring all things slumber from September 15th through October 1st from noon until 4 p.m. each day, and if you’ve never experienced the true potency of the pillows and other down products in our European Sleep System, you must stop by and see what all the fuss is about.
I will also be signing the beautiful new book Monograms and Antique Linens, which has just been published by Hoffman Media, daily on September 25th, 26th or 27th anytime between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The collection of beautiful linens, hand-sewn clothing, and fine monogram work was curated by Hoffman Media’s editor-in-chief Phyllis DePiano, and I’m seriously proud to be featured within the historically astute book that exudes romance with every page-turn.
I hope to see you at Round Top as we show off our antiques and monogrammed bedding that complements our amazing Hungarian goose down products. If fine Italian sheeting and shams, decorative pillows, hand-loomed bespoke bedding, heirloom linens, museum-quality textiles, or primitive and vintage linens don’t thrill you, we’ll also have our lavender spa products, fine laces, custom headboards and nightwear on hand. We call it our something-for-everyone selection, ya’ll!
Reviews for North of Crazy
Lee Gutkind, the editor of Creative Nonfiction Magazine, deems North of Crazy “informative, passionate, compelling and extraordinarily well-written. Neltje’s remarkable story captures and combines her individuality of spirit with a personal journey that will surprise and impress readers, page by page.”
Bill Henderson, the editor of Pushcart Prize, calls North of Crazy “An epic and very personal memoir of riches to rags to spiritual and artistic triumph. Neltje’s life story is profoundly moving–and instructive. A classic, honest, and beautifully written memoir.”
